His cheek was fair, his chin downy, his hair flaxen, his hat a white fur one, with a long fleecy nap. He had neither trunk, valise, carpet-bag, nor parcel. No porter followed him. He was unaccompanied by friends. Stared at, but unsaluted, with the air of one neither courting nor shunning regard, but evenly pursuing the path of duty, lead it through solitudes or cities, he held on his way along [2]the lower deck until he chanced to come to a placard nigh the captain's office, offering a reward for the capture of a mysterious impostor, supposed to have recently arrived from the East; quite an original genius in his vocation, as would appear, though wherein his originality consisted was not clearly given; but what purported to be a careful description of his person followed. 허먼 멜빌(Herman Melville)
선원(Crew) 출신의 모험소설(Adventure Fiction) 작가(1819~1891) : 허먼 멜빌은 할아버지 때부터 무역상으로 부를 축적한 부유한 가문의 여덟 형제 중 셋째로 태어나 풍족한 유년시절을 보냈습니다. 그러나, 수입상 아버지의 잇따른 사업 실패와 사망으로 경제적으로 어려움을 겪기 시작하였으며, 학업을 잊지 못하고 생계에 뛰어들어야 했습니다. 그러던 중 전 세계를 강타한 장기 불황(Long Depression)으로 일자리를 잃고, 1839년 영국행 화물선에 몸을 실었습니다. 이후 그는 선원이자 미 해군 수병으로 세계 각지의 섬 – 마르키즈 제도(Marquesas Islands)의 누쿠 히바(Nuku Hiva), 타히티(Tahiti), 타이오해 만(Taiohae Bay), 라하이나 섬(Lahaina), 호놀룰루(Honolulu) 등을 떠돌며 다양한 경험을 쌓았고 이는 그가 모험소설 작가로 활동하는 자양분이 되었습니다. 그가 직접 교류한 타이피 부족(Typee)과 흥미진진한 모험 여행기를 담은 타이피(Typee : A Peep at Polynesian Life)(1846)와 오무(Omoo : A Narrative of Adventures in the South Seas)(1847)는 허먼 멜빌을 ‘선원 출신의 모험소설 작가’로 세상에 알리는 작품으로 인기를 누렸습니다. 그러나, 작품의 방향을 완전히 바꾼 세 번째 작품 마디(Mardi : and a Voyage Thither)(1849)부터 예전과 같은 호평을 받지 못하였으며 상업적으로도 그리 좋은 성적을 거두지 못하였습니다. 때문에 그는 세관 검사원으로 생계를 이어가야 했습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 죽기 직전까지 빌리 버드(Billy Budd, Sailor)(1924) 원고를 손에서 놓지 않았을 정도로 소설은 물론 시까지 꾸준히 작품 활동을 이어나갔으며, 자비출판도 감수할 정도로 문학에 대한 뜨거운 애정을 숨기지 않았습니다. 허먼 멜빌 탄생 100주년(1919년)을 기점으로 ‘재발견’되어 ‘미국의 대문호’로써 전 세계에 명성을 떨치고 있습니다.
뉴욕타임즈(The New York Times)의 모비딕(Mobie Dick)(1891) : 허먼 멜빌은 타이피(Typee : A Peep at Polynesian Life)(1846)부터 완성하기 전에 사망한 빌리 버드(Billy Budd, Sailor)(1924)까지 십여 편이 넘는 작품을 꾸준히 발표하였으나, 그가 얻은 총 수익은 만 달러가 넘지 않습니다. 현재의 그에 대한 평가와 별도로, 허먼 멜빌은 초기작의 반짝 인기를 제외하면, 대부분의 책이 절판되었을 정도로 살아 생전에 ‘대중적으로 성공한 작가’는 아니였습니다. 오죽하면 그가 사망했을 때 뉴욕타임즈(The New York Times) 부고란에서 그의 작품을 Moby Dick이 아닌, Mobie Dick이라 오기했을 정도로 말이죠.
D.H. 로렌스(David Herbert Lawrence)의 미국 고전문학 연구(Studies in Classic American Literature)(1923) : 채털리 부인의 사랑(Lady Chatterley's Lover)(1989)로 잘 알려진 영국 작가 D.H. 로렌스(David Herbert Lawrence)는 1923년 발표한 미국 고전문학 연구(Studies in Classic American Literature)을 통해 에드거 앨런 포(Edgar Allan Poe), 너새니얼 호손(Nathaniel Hawthorne), 월트 휘트먼(Walter Walt Whitman) 등의 대문호와 함께 허먼 멜빌의 작품을 소개하였습니다.

리비아탄 멜빌레이(Livyatan Melvillei)(2010) : 2010년 새롭게 발견한 초대형 향유고래(giant sperm whale)의 화석 이름은 허먼 멜빌을 기리는 학명 리비아탄 멜빌레이(Livyatan melvillei)으로 지어졌습니다. 신체의 일부분만 발견되었으나, 총길이 18미터에 몸무게가 40톤으로 추정될 정도로 거대한 덩치를 자랑합니다. 호주 Beaumaris Bay의 해변을 걷다가, 화석을 발견한 발견자 Murray Orr가 그의 팬이라고 하네요.
